How Windshield Repairs Work
Your car’s windshield is constructed of two layers of glass, with a layer of plastic in between. When a rock or other flying item hits your windshield, it can create a small chip or crack in the outer layer of glass. If the damage is minor, it can be repaired. More extensive damage, however, may require a new windshield. This would be in scenarios where the damage is in the driver’s line of sight or a crack longer than a dollar bill. This is because a chip or crack can grow over time, making it more difficult to see and reducing the safety of the windshield.
When you bring your car into a repair shop for a windshield repair, the technician will start by cleaning the area around the chip or crack. Then, they will inject a special resin into the damage. The resin will fill in the chip or crack, bonding the two layers of glass together. The resin will then be cured with ultraviolet light. Once it is cured, the repair will be nearly invisible.
When to Replace Your Windshield
Because your windshield is the first line of defense against the outside world, keeping it in good condition is important. However, a repair may not be possible if the damage is too significant. In this case, you will need to replace your windshield.
Replacement is required when:
- The glass does not have plastic laminate between the layers and is just glass.
- The damage is in the driver’s line of sight.
- The crack is longer than a dollar bill.
- There are multiple chips.
- There is more than one chip or crack.
- The damage is more than halfway through the windshield.
- The outside edge of the windshield is damaged.
- The glass is cracked all the way through both layers.
- Evaluating If You Need a Windshield Replacement or Repair
There are three main factors to consider when deciding whether you need a windshield replacement or repair.
1. Take a Look at the Size of Your Windshield’s New Damage
The general rule of thumb is that the damage should not be longer than a dollar bill, but some people even prefer the damage to be no longer than a quarter. If your windshield damage is larger than this, then it will likely need to be replaced. Anything on the smaller side will give you the flexibility to seek a repair which can save you time and money.
2. Determine Where the New Damage Is Located
If your new windshield damage is in your line of sight, then you will likely need to replace your windshield. If the damage is located elsewhere, then you may be able to get away with a repair. It’s important to keep in mind that even a small chip or crack can spread over time. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to seek the advice of a professional.
3. Consider How Much Damage Is Present
A windshield replacement will likely be necessary if you have multiple chips or cracks. A single crack or chip may still allow you to get away with a repair. However, if the damage is more than halfway through your windshield, it’s time to start considering a replacement.
